A little bit about who we are...and who we hope to be
First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway, New Jersey, has been around a while - founded in 1758 to be exact. We have a deep appreciation for our past, but a greater hope for our future.
To the left is the logo we conceived for the church, following our New Beginnings process, which began in 2012. It contains our visions statement: "Growing in Faith Growing in Love Growing in Community"
We are also a connectional church, which means we are part of a greater family of churches. Below are web links which will point you to some of the groups we have special connection with.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), with denominational offices in Louisville, Kentucky, has approximately 2.3 million members, more than 10,000 congregations and 14,000 ordained and active ministers. Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
Presbytery of Newton
Newton Presbytery is the regional governing body for 59 Presbyterian member churches in New Jersey's Morris, Sussex, Warren, and Hunterdon counties. We are one of 22 Presbyteries that make up the Synod of the Northeast of thePresbyterian Church (U.S.A.), along with the rest of the Presbyteries in New Jersey, New York, and all of New England. Our membership is comprised of the ministers of the member churches, together with an equal number of member church elders.
Synod of the Northeast
The Synod of the Northeast boundaries consist of eight states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and has 22 presbyteries and approximately 1,130 churches. There are currently five Presbyterian Partnership Groups (PPG) that have 3-8 presbyteries based on geographical region and they distribute mission funds for worthy projects in their congregations, presbyteries and regions. In 1998, we formed an international partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar.
